Diagnosing ADHD in children and teenagers
19th May 2025
Diagnosing ADHD in children can be challenging, as its symptoms may overlap with those of other conditions. It’s crucial to find a clinician experienced in diagnosing ADHD to ensure your child receives an accurate diagnosis and the appropriate treatment plan.
Early Diagnosis Makes a Big Difference
Recognising the signs of ADHD early means your child can get the right help—whether that’s behavioural therapy, support at school, parent coaching, or, in some cases, medication. An accurate diagnosis from a qualified professional is the first step.

Before the Assessment appointment: Information Gathering
Prior to the assessment, you and your child’s school will complete a series of questionnaires and psychometric tests that are evidence-based and proven to accurately assess ADHD. These tools help our clinicians gather critical insights into your child’s behaviour, challenges, and strengths. If your child is old enough, they will also be asked to complete forms that help us understand their perspective on the difficulties they may be facing.
During the ADHD Assessment
The assessment typically lasts around two hours. During this time, you and your child will meet with a senior clinician who will ask in-depth questions about your child’s development, behaviours, and academic performance. You’re encouraged to note any concerns or milestones to discuss during the meeting.
The clinician will assess whether ADHD is the primary condition or if other issues, such as anxiety or depression, might be contributing to your child’s symptoms. Diagnosing co-occurring conditions (known as co-morbidities) is a key part of the process. At the end of the session, the clinician will provide an initial opinion on whether ADHD is present and will discuss treatment recommendations and next steps.
After the ADHD Assessment
After the assessment, you’ll receive a comprehensive report that details the diagnosis (if one is made), any additional recommended assessments, and a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.
While some parents may wish to pursue medication through the NHS, we always recommend discussing this option with your local GP before pursuing a private assessment. ADHD medications are controlled substances, and only specialists are authorised to initiate treatment. You may need to continue seeing a private psychiatrist until the medication is stabilised, after which your GP may take over the prescription, though not all GPs are comfortable with this.
